THE LEVELS OF TEACHING

The Italian Society of Hernia and Abdominal Wall Surgery (ISHAWS), Italian Chapter of the European Hernia Society, established the Italian School of Hernia and Abdominal Wall Surgery in 2009.
Aimed at surgeons and residents in general surgery, the school’s goal is to provide professional training for specialists in the treatment of abdominal wall defects.
The teaching program is divided into several levels:
• Level 1 Course
Basic theoretical course, with a final assessment test, prerequisite for the more advanced levels. Duration: 4 days

• Level 2 Course
Theoretical-practical course with performance of surgical procedures on cadavers, under the mentorship of the school’s instructors.
Duration: 2 days

• Level 3 Course
Practical courses focused on learning surgical techniques and proper use of biomaterials, held at least in 2 accredited facilities.
Duration: 4 days

• Continuing Education Courses
Students can participate in single-topic courses, organized or sponsored by the society, focusing on the latest scientific innovations.

• Course in Abdominal Wall Defect Surgery, with the patronage of the European Hernia Society
Awarded upon completion of a training program that includes earning 100 ISHAWS credits.
